Dealing with Imposter Syndrome

Since becoming more firmly seated in the world of social media, imposter syndrome has become more of an issue than ever.

Social media is a great way to promote yourself and your work without too much investment other than your time. You can go about it with posts on instagram, or by making videos on Instagram reels or Tiktok. Either way, you are reaching a much wider audience than ever before.

While this is great, and has been such an amazing source for pulling in more readers, it has also hindered me in some ways.

There are many other authors and writers on these social media platforms who are sharing their journeys as well. It happens from time to time that you see them flourishing and going viral and making more sales than ever before. And though you want to be happy for them and supportive, there is always that little voice in the back of your mind that says “why not me.”

This is when imposter syndome starts to creep in. All of the thoughts of “I must not be as good of a writer as them,” “people don’t like my writing as much,” or what have you.

You need to remind yourself, THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Everyone’s journey is different and not everyone is lucky enough to have a video or post go viral. Yes, talent and skill comes into play as well, but it is important not to compare your journey to someone else’s. That leads down a road that is hard to crawl back from.

If you haven’t found your readership yet, then try marketing to a new audience. Switch it up and go on Facebook reels, or post your TikToks on Instagram reels. Change your videos from text based, to image based. Find what works for you, what gets the views, and utilize it to your advantage.

It takes a lot of time, effort, and patience, but eventually, it will pay off. Not all of us have made it there yet, but we will.
