3 Alternative Ways to Share your Writing with the World
It’s time to share your writing with the world! Not all writers have the end goal of publishing a book. Some people enjoy writing as a hobby or have other goals in mind. There are some great places to share your writing with the community, even if you don’t necessarily want to be formally published.
Reedsy
I found Reedsy through Barnes and Noble, so I knew it was trustworthy (or at least more so than just searching and picking a random website). The site gives you a selection of short story prompts to choose from.
It is a blog as well as a place to submit short stories. Typing in reedsy.com does not bring you straight to the short story page. Check it out here!
If chosen as the winner, you win $50 and sometimes a gift card or something from whoever is sponsoring that week's prompts. It is a great place to practice writing using prompts, especially if you are having some writer's block. It will give you ideas for your own writing, and you’ll have a little break from whatever you are working on to come up for air and do something light and fun.
Wattpad
Another great site to share short stories, poems, full-length books, or any writing you want really, is Wattpad. I found this website while listening to a favorite podcast of mine, Directionally Challenged. Anna Todd, the author of After, was on their podcast. She talked about how she was discovered on Wattpad, where she was writing fan fiction about Harry Styles.
(I highly recommend listening to the podcast, specifically this episode, but the others are great as well. If you want more info on the podcast, go to this site! https://www.candicekayla.com/)
Wattpad also does contests sometimes, but not all that often. But it is a great place to practice writing with the opportunity to receive feedback from other writers and peers.
Poetry Sites
Even though you can post poems on Wattpad, there are other sites more specific to poetry. These are for submitting poetry to be entered to win a spot in whatever that website has — a magazine, newsletter, website, etc. You can also win money. I have entered a few times, just for fun.
These are just two of the many places you can submit poetry, but they are also great for reading poetry and expanding your exposure to it because it’s not something we see all the time unless we go out of our way to look for it.
Kindle Vella
This is a new addition to Kindle Direct Publishing. It is similar to Wattpad because you can share your story in weekly/daily/monthly installments. I haven’t tried it out yet, but have been debating putting my All I Want and The Assassin’s Order stories on there. If and when I test it out, I’ll be sure to write up how it works and how I feel about it!
There are so many great ways to share your writing now with the community. I hope you all get out there and take advantage of some of these great opportunities. Let me know if you try out any of the sites I listed above, and if you try out any different ones!
